Lumigrids » 2012 [Source]

“Lumigrids is an LED projector for bicycles, which aims to improve safety during night riding. It projects square grids onto the ground. By observing changes in the grids, the rider can easily comprehend the landforms ahead.”

I want it.

Later that day, Vimes released an APB on two suspicious characters, (alias Crystal and SlyWit). If they were ever seen around Ankh-Morpork again, they were to be have a plume stuffed down their gullet before being turned over to the patrician.

On the Guards of Manehattan

askponyinabox:

SlyWit: I’m a bit of a fan of the plume, on our guards. Makes them seem pristine.

Jaffa: Well, could go with a plume that isnt all fluffy like the Royal Guards… since Manehatten is a port city, what about something like say… a fish’s fin? Well, a dorsal fin

SlyWit: I think the Watch will end up being the ones without plumes, the grittier, noirier designs. The Guards have plumes.

Starry: I’m still trying to imagin pony guards with fins

Jaffa: It wasnt silly for Luna’s guards.

SlyWit: But these guards don’t belong to the sea ponies!

Jaffa: It is a port city… and since the whole ceremonial thing…

SlyWit: Maybe if they have boats for plumesimage

Jaffa: Hmm …what about waves?
SlyWit: Or the skyline of Manehattan

Let me see if I can break down this question …

First off, we have four different locations. Now, two of them are actually locations in the DWA canon, the Lunar Republic and the Crystal Empire (I do give you a few points for that clever pun, “Crystallion”, despite that not being a canon name. Maybe it’s like a … pick up line among Cadance’s subjects. “Hey, you’ve never ridden a stallion until you’ve ridden a Crystallion.” But I digress.)

So, let’s get the easiest one out of the way first:

The Lunar Republic. If you’ve listened to the Shadows of the Lunar Republic episode, you’ll know what this is a bad idea.

Pros: Luna. Vibrant night life (only night life?).

Cons: Stripped of all your flesh to the bone.

Crystal Empire. My biggest question is “Is this really an empire?” Aren’t empires supposed to be a bundle of nations under one banner? It’d stand to reason that the Crystal Empire’s politics lean toward the imperialistic. Heck, last ruler I’m aware of ruling that area was King Green-eyed-meenie, whose legislation entirely consisted of muttering “Crystals.” His speeches consisted of growling at any disenters. So there is that, and the populace has been stuck in some sort of out-of-time area for the last thousand years. All this bodes poorly for the living conditions. Heck, most of those ponies suffer memory loss and look very strung out. Not to mention they live in the middle of the frozen north, so travel is probably a pain. I’m not too keen on choosing this place to live, either.

Pros: Long, rich history

Cons: Dark, rich history (and frozen wasteland)

Now we get to the difficult part. Just what is the Celestial Empire and Equestrian Republic. The best comparison would perhaps be the C. R. period of Equestira history and the history that starts after Luna returns. So, let’s do that …

Celestial Empire. Is this an empire? I could see the argument being made for that, if you count unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies as individual nations. I am tempted to call it Celestial Kingdom, but that’s starting to split hairs. So, what are our pros and cons? Well, many pros, few cons. Celestia is easily the wisest of all the monarchs, and has a very soft handed approach. The citizens seem for the most part happy, you’ve got a choice of big citys like Manehattan, the splendor of Canterlot, or cozy lands like Ponyville. Downside being perhaps Celestia’s wellbeing herself. For a period of nearly 1000 years, she has no equal ruling beside her. Sounds lonely.

Pros: Peaceful, varied lands

Cons: Celestia’s tragic story puts a damper on a lot of rememberence holidays. Oh, it’s Nightmare Night again. Remember how Celestia had to banish her only living companion because she went mad? Sucks, don’t it … Candy corn?

Equastrian Republic. Making a small assumption that this would be Equastria after Luna returns, and Cadance and Twilight ascend to princesshood. This wouldn’t technically be a republic, more a quadrumvirate, or potentially peaceable ruling of at least two separate nations (Crystal Empire, and Equestria). Now, you say to yourself “Clearly this is the best choice! We’ve got Luna, we’ve got Twilight, we’ve got a happy Celestia!” Oh, ho ho! Not so fast my friend. Let’s look at the recent history of Equestria: evil alicorn attack, Changeling invasion, chaos god running rampage, alicorns popping out of the woodwork like stiff wings at a pony sock convention. Do you really want to live at a time and place where you have to take out Mad God insurance?

Pros: All four princesses.

Cons: Unbridled power struggles between cosmic entities.
